Katathong golf course has been established for several years as the best course in Phang Nga and was constructed close to Phang Nga Town further inland in 2015.
The golf course is well known for its narrow fairways and water features. It is located in a valley surrounded by mountains which allow a constant flow of water all year round.
This beautifully landscaped area is rich in history going as far back as the 15th century. This was once a bustling tin mining industry for the local inhabitants and played a big part in supporting the community. The tin mines were abandoned during the 1900 century when the global demand dropped.
The present owner of Katathong Khun Somkiat Ratanarungiwat had a completely different vision to create a unique golf course, while still displaying its tin mining ancestry.
The clubhouse is designed in a fascinating Portuguese architectural design and decorated from the tin mining era. Interestingly during your round of golf, you will also find mining relics scattered around the golf course.
The whole province had waited in anticipation for Aquella Golf Resort and Country Club to open and will now undoubtedly elevate Phang Nga as a quality golfing destination to visit.
Aquella golf course is owned by the son of Hong Kong property tycoon developer Pacific Century Premium Developments Ltd (PCPD). This being the newest golf-related addition to Phangnga, is attracting enormous interest, especially with news of the new Andaman airport planned to start construction in the next few years.
This particular golf course has been constructed on the original Thai Mueang golf site that was destroyed in 2004, by the infamous Tsunami.
Aquella Country Club looks set to stimulate a bright future for this area and will now take the accolade as the best golf course in Phang NGA.

If you decide to travel to any of the golf courses in Phang Nga and Phuket without using our private transportation, we have noted various useful things to look out for on arrival to make your golf experience more enjoyable.
Once leaving any highway or main road leading to any of the golf courses expect to find yourself entering impressive looking designed entrances and security check points. Once in the golf course compounds follow the signs to the main carpark areas normally located near the clubhouse.
Driving through the course grounds is a pleasant drive, superbly manicured fairways, plenty of lakes, water features and depending on which golf course mountainous back drops or turquoise sea.
When arriving at each clubhouse you will normally be greeted by staff and they will check your booking status and take your golf bags. You will then proceed to the proshop where you will present your golf vouchers or documents confirming your booking.
We always recommend arriving more than 1 hour before your tee time in case you would like to use the restaurant facilities or would like to practice on the range and putting green.
At many of the courses you will find impressive Spa’s and massages available
If you are intending to relax after your game to experience these facilities please bring a change of clothing. Changing room facilities are available including showers with towels and lockers.
It’s essential to reserve your tee time with us before you play, this enables you to receive significant green fee savings and one of our team will inform you of payment methods.
If payment isn’t received by us before you play you will be expected to pay the full walk-in rate which is considerably higher.
During high season we advise you to book your tee times well in advance. Especially if you are travelling with a large group not to be disappointed.
Apart from your golf clubs don’t forget your sun cream and umbrellas.
Sheltering yourself from a possible shower is self-explanatory, but using an umbrella as a shield to protect yourself from the harmful rays is essential.
Sometimes a hand towel is available to use on the course but we recommend taking your own towels, one for cleaning the ball and one for perspiration.
Lastly don’t forget to take two gloves.
Bring at least 1 litre of bottled water with you. Drinks can be bought at the course, keeping hydrated is essential during your round.
What’s better than drinking a beer or two while playing, however make sure that for every beer consumed that you drink two similar size bottles of water not to suffer from headaches.
Each golfer is assigned with one compulsory caddy, normally a friendly helpful lady, experienced on the course, but limited English language skills. She will greet you with the traditional Thai’ Wai” and bow, next she will mark down how many clubs you have in the golf bag. During the round her tasks will include selecting clubs for each shot, searching in the rough for errant shots, mark and cleaning your golf ball, reading your putting lines.
Golf balls are normally available to buy on the way to the courses or when you arrive, even though I would always advise taking a dozen balls with you when you travel.
Quite often during the round the girls quite often help to push the older players up hills and to massage a strained muscle..
Don’t forget the caddy tip which usually amounts to 400 baht and 500 baht because they are worth every penny.
Once the round is completed the caddy will check that clubs have not been lost, she will also make sure all covers are back on the clubs. Before you walk in the direction of the clubhouse to relax or shower, she will expect a tip.
Once she has received this she will take your golf set to a secure area where you will be able to collect it on the way out. Normally the person looking after the bag is known as the bag drop and when you are finally ready to leave, under your supervision he will take your bag to your vehicle.
It’s customary to tip him 20-50 baht for his effort.
(KNOWN AS COOL SEASON)
The best time to play golf in Phang Nga is between the months of November and February, which is classed as the cool season.
It’s called cool season not because it’s cool but because the temperature is warm and pleasant to golf in and there’s little rainfall.
Phang Nga’s temperature like many other places in Southern Thailand stays quite constant during most parts of the year. Average highs from 30 to 34 centigrade and the lows from 23 to 25.
In March the temperature starts to increase.
The hot season starts between the months of April to May.
During these hot months, it is recommended to start playing golf earlier in the morning, preferably staying away from the midday blistering heat.
The monsoon starts middle of May and during the next few months you can expect many days with bursts of rain followed by sunshine.
This time of the year is hot and humid, however, hotel prices are greatly reduced and the golf courses are less busy.
During June, July, and August the weather is much the same as in May, with short heavy showers but the courses drain well and play is normally able to continue.
We can’t totally rule out heavy rain during these months from an unexpected low depression system. That’s the chance you take when traveling to any destination during the low season.
Typhoons are unheard of in the area.
September and October tend to be the wettest months of the year along the South West Coast.
We recommend avoiding visiting Phang Nga to play golf until the weather improves in November.
Selected to host the Johnny Walker Classic.
